Basketball players and fans react to the sentencing of Brittney Griner in Russia:

With WNBA star Brittney Griner sentenced to nine years in Russian prison for possessing hashish oil cartridges in a Russian airport, the entire basketball community has reacted with outrage and support for BG.

Skylar Diggins-Smith, a Phoenix Mercury teammate, gave an emotional response on Thursday when asked about the WNBA continuing to play after the news.

Diggins-Smith told reporters, “Nobody wanted to play today.” “How can you approach the game with a clear mind when the entire group is crying before the game?”

Many people, including Griner’s agent, WNBA teammates and competitors, and NBA players, have continued to share their thoughts and sentiments on social media.

Skylar Diggins-Smith (Skylar Diggins-Smith):

Colas, Lindsay Kagawa:

Brittney Griner’s sentencing today was harsh by Russian legal standards, proving what we’ve suspected all along: Brittney is being used as a political pawn. We appreciate and will continue to support the efforts of @POTUS and @SecBlinken to expedite a deal. [1/3] August 4, 2022 — Lindsay Kagawa Colas (she/her) (@kagawacolas)
